| Make English the National Language of the United States, NOW!Now, before we, the natives of the United States lose our heritage, national heritage and the economic and societal benefits that a common language provides. Of course, many people have emotional reasons for wanting to see English officially made the national language, but there are far more important reasons: peace and economic prosperity. Some Hispanics argue that they may lose their heritage if they are expected to speak English to strangers and in business settings. Utter nonsense. My family heritage is Swiss, and I speak near fluent German, although it has been several generations and 175 years since my family arrived in America. What they are really arguing for is the erosion of the dominant culture of the United States, and replacing it with the Hispanic culture of the countries they left. So let's review those cultures: Hmm, rampant corruption, massive drug cartels, hyperinflation, instable governments led by either right wing military dictatorships, or left wing socialist/Marxists. Oh, yes, that is the sort of culture we want here! Why would we want to continue the peace and prosperity that Americans have come to expect? You don't have to look very far around the world to see what the effects of multiple languages within a single national. Almost every nation that has groups that maintain their own language and do not ALSO speak the dominant national language experience civil strife and often civil war. There are many reasons for this but the basic one is as language constructs thought, different languages create different ways of thinking; and the inability of mono-lingual groups of people to understand the perspectives of those who speak other languages in their midst leads to strife. Anyone who is fluent in more than one language can tell you they think differently in each of the languages. This leads to fundamental differences in culture, religion, value systems and more. When these differences are integrate in a society that accepts one dominant language, such the United States, those differences strength the culture by infusing it with new ideas and challenging stagnancy. But when the minority language group refuses to learn and accept the dominant language and the value system that it brings, then the civil strife begins. Examples? Look around the world right now! Arab / Jews in the Middle East. Basques in Spain. Arab-speaking Muslims in France. Kurds in Turkey. Turks in Germany. Russia and their separatists. And history is replete with examples: Wales / England. Scotland / England. A common language binds us together with a common understanding of ideas and values and a means to exchange them. It doesn't impede maintaining family heritage; that's something you do at home and within your local community. We're just asking you to learn English and speak it in business and in dealing with strangers. And no, that doesn't make us xenophobic or racist. In addition to being good for our society and economy, it's just common sense and courtesy. |
