Everyone knows about the catacombs of Rome (which are just empty tunnels, by the way - I've seen them) but did you know there are catacombs under Paris. And by my estimate (adding up the numbers of skulls per average 10 ft section and length of tunnels) there are 9 million bodies' bones stacked up here!

When Napoleon was renovating the city in the 1800's he needed more space to make wider avenues (Paris used to be just narrow winding streets like London), so he had all the cemeteries dug up and the bones were stacked in the old sewer tunnels (a new sewer was being built) . It's just a few stops south of Notre Dame on the Metro, but you've got to ask a local cop to find it - even many Parisians don't know it's there!
