Key Facts About JB Slemmer
Education
University of Virginia, for both undergraduate programs in chemistry & psychology and graduate program in chemical engineering.
Profession:
I'm fairly unusual in that my aptitudes, interests, abilities, and work history cover a wide range - from purely technical in the Internet / I.T. (computing) and chemical/environmental fields to a very people/management/business development orientation.
I'm a professional in the IT (information technology) field - specifically, in Internet eCommerce business strategy, enterprise architecture and emerging technology analysis. I work for BellSouth in management in IT. I've also been in project management of web integration and software development - putting business on the web in an interactive setting (such as banking online) and also in the application of computers and the internet to solving environmental health & safety problems. It's an interesting and rewarding career, enabling me to be intellectually challenged, fairly compensated, and also do something altruistic!
I started out as a process engineer designing chemical plants, and then writing process simulation software in Fortran in order to do the job more efficiently. Being lured into the environmental field on the basis of my graduate research, I rose in the environmental profession; managing environmental information for Waste Management, Inc., and also always developing computer applications; winning the company's top award in 1991 for an expert system I wrote. Finally ending up in London, England in 1992 to manage the international environmental compliance program and to develop multi-lingual, multi-national computer reporting systems for compliance management.
As the environmental field began its decline in the early 90's I realized that I was too closely tied to one aspect of the IT field. I felt that my interests and future lie in the direction of internet application of information technologies.
Returning to the US in late 1998, I started my own consulting IT services business, using my project and program management experiences and abilities to generate income, while I focused on expanding my technical skills by developing large web sites for myself and for clients.
Presently, I am developing and directing internet business strategy, managing projects and developing programs and concepts for BellSouth, a regional telecom company.

Married (stroppy English woman, in need of discipline...), no kids, hobbies: travel, gardening, exercise, weightlifting, concerts (at Chastain Park!), hiking, racquetball, camping, the beach (anywhere in the Gulf!)
