Computer Printer Reviews

Find the Best Laser or Inkjet, Color or Black and White Printer; for home or business

It may seem confusing to find the best printer to meet your needs at the best price, but despite the marketing hype, there are several printers that stand out head and shoulders above the rest in both quality and price.

Top Picks

Best monochrome (black and white) laser printer

The Brother printers take this category

For business work groups, small business and home businesses the HL-5250DNT.  purchased this printer in May 2006.  So far, it has exceeded my expectations.  It is unbelievably fast - 30 pages per minute is 8 times faster than my old HP LaserJet IV.  In addition to speed; it has 4 times the resolution at 1200 dpi by 1200 dpi; it comes network-ready with three standard interfaces: USB, parallel and Ethernet for a CAT5 connection to your home or business network, or router.  It also has fully automatic duplex (no manually flipping the paper over), 2 paper trays so it can take an entire ream of paper at one loading (or two different paper types; and you can add an optional 3rd paper tray!

Here's where to get the Brother 5250DNT (or 5250DN) network-ready laser printer at the best prices:

Best color laser printers

Oki (formerly Okidata) and Minolta lead this category

The OKI C5150N and C5300N are fast, high quality color laset printers that usually sell for $400 to $500.  I use them to print photographs on to ordinary plain white heavyweight paper, and it is photo quality. I bought the OKI in Nivember 2005, after spending a year reading every review and looking at many printers in the stores.  The OKI C5150 is unique in that it has a stright paper path.  The toner cartridges hang stationary in a line and the paper moves beneath them, one after another.  This means the OKI can handle longer paper (banners) and much stiffer paper than most color lasers that mount the toner cartridges on a rotating wheel.  Few moving parts should also translate to greater reliability.
