Teeth Whitening, Brightening and Bleaching

Want a brighter smile?  These days there appear to be countless ways to get a whiter smile.  In our image-conscious society, appearance can make a difference in more than just dating; many studies have shown that it can be a significant influencer in job hiring, promotions and income.

Methods

So what is the best method?  Let's look at what is currently available, starting with the most expensive options: :

  1. Laser brightening - A one time treatment, in less than an hour; it does work.  But it is expensive, and you'll need to go back and pay the full amount every time your teeth become stained or darker.
  2. Dentist's office solutions - You can also go to your dentist to have him paint your teeth with a whitening jell.  But like laser, it's expensive and doesn't last
  3. Custom dental trays and refill solutions - You get two plastic trays, one upper an done lower, to fit your mouth exactly.  You put a drop of the whitening solution in the trays, and either wear them for 1 hour, several hours or overnight.  The trays are fairly comfortable, and it has the advantage that you can do this at home and re-do the whitening whenever you need to!
  4. Over the counter non-custom trays -
  5. Over the counter whitening strips -
  6. Over the counter whitening toothpaste -

Recommendations

I've used all of the methods, except laser; but I have plenty of friends who have tried that, too.  Custom trays is the best method.  It is inexpensive compared to laser, and allows you do re-do the whitening whenever you want to at home.  Refill kits are available over the internet, too.

I've used the Excel Nite White system, with excellent results

You first need the starter kit.  This includes the molds so you can make an impression of your teeth, then mail it off for the custom trays:

Then whenever you need refills, you can choose the concentration you like best, for 1 hr, 4 hr or overnight whitening.

This is the 10% concentration for overnight and very sensitive teeth. This is the 16% concentration for 4 hour to overnight whiteningThis is the 22% concentration for fast 1-hour whitening.
